Bid farewell to mundane cabbage preparations and introduce your palate to a symphony of flavors with this delightful baked cabbage recipe.
About this Recipe
We’ve all faced the challenge of making vegetables appealing, especially to the young ones. If your children usually shy away from greens, this dish might just change the game. With its crispy edges, tender heart, and a dash of caraway magic, it’s set to turn any veggie skeptic into a cabbage aficionado. Say goodbye to veggie battles and hello to clean plates!
1 large head of green cabbage
2-3 tbsp olive oil
Salt, to taste
Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
1-1.5 tsp caraway seeds
Don’t be alarmed if the outer edges of your cabbage attain a slight char during baking. This is not an error but a flavor advantage. Those charred portions infuse the cabbage with a rich, smoky depth, elevating the entire dish’s taste profile. As for the caraway seeds, their distinct flavor is a personal preference. If you or your guests are unfamiliar with caraway, you might consider starting with a modest amount or even presenting it as an optional sprinkle. That said, I wholeheartedly suggest trying it at least once; in my experience, its aromatic nuances harmoniously complement the cabbage, enhancing the dish’s flavor complexity. And remember, cooking is as much an art as it is a science. Embrace the freedom to modify ingredients and adjust to suit your taste, blending tradition with personal touch for the most delightful results.
Step by Step Instructions
Preheat the Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 190°C.
Prepare the Cabbage: Remove any damaged outer leaves from the cabbage. Rinse the cabbage under cold water and pat dry. Slice the cabbage crosswise into approximately 4-5 (2 cm) thick circular slices, keeping as much of the round shape as possible.
Season the Cabbage: Lay out the cabbage slices in a single layer in a large baking dish or on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Drizzle the olive oil (be generous here) over them, ensuring both sides are well-coated. Sprinkle each slice with salt, freshly ground black pepper, and caraway seeds.
Bake: Insert the baking dish or tray into the oven and bake for approximately 30-40 minutes.
Check & Turn: At the halfway mark (around 15-20 minutes), carefully flip each cabbage slice to ensure even cooking and browning. Aim for the edges to become slightly crispy while the center remains tender.
Serve: Once finished, extract from the oven and transfer the baked cabbage slices onto serving plates. If desired, sprinkle a tad more salt, and pepper before serving.
